About Church

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, also known as the Indian Orthodox Church, is a living legacy of faith, founded by St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who arrived on the shores of India in A.D. 52. Rooted deeply in the soil of India, this autonomous and autocephalous Oriental Orthodox Church continues to thrive, with its spiritual heart anchored in Devalokam, near Kottayam, Kerala, where it is headquartered.

Today, the Church stands as a global community of approximately 2.5 million members, though majority of the devoted congregation remains in the state of Kerala, in the southwest of India. Under the guidance of His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the present Catholicos, the Church continues its journey of spiritual and administrative growth. The church is organized into 32 dioceses, each shepherded by a bishop, who provides both administrative leadership and spiritual care to their flocks. As it carries forward the eternal flame of the mission of St. Thomas, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church remains a beacon of faith and unity, a bridge between generations and nations, embracing all with the love and grace of Christ.
